The mail from the end of August thru some of September was being held in
remote locations because the Postal Service knew it was undeliverable. The
majority of customers in St. Bernard have filed changes of address. The
backdated mail has been being processed over the past three weeks and is now
being forwarded. If you have not put in a change of address, you can pick up
your October mail from the Covington P.O. back parking lot. The mail from
August and September has been returned to the sender for those that do not
have a change of address on file. The Postal Service cannot hold customers'
mail indefinitely until they are found. Businesses will receive the returned
pieces stating customer temporarily away. Please contact the sender for
anything you have not received. Many of these senders will re-send this mail
in an attempt to reach you. If they do this, it will be in Covington. If you
have had a check sent back, contact the sender and have them re-send the
chec k to your old address and it will be in Covington. For those with
change of address orders you should have noticed receiving older mail in the
past week. As far as periodicals, many mailers have withheld sending these
in the mail knowing the devastation and lack of mail delivery. Contact them
about your subscriptions. My guess is you may have extensions or may be able
to get your back copies at a later date. It's also a possibility they are
still at a remote site. The post offices from St. Bernard Parish will
continue to be in the Covington P.O. parking lot for some time. There are
not enough residents in the parish and services and facilities to warrant a
move at this time. The majority of customers are on the North Shore. When
this changes, the trailers will be relocated to the Chalmette P.O. until
the actual building is restored.
