12-year-old evacuee dies in accidental shooting

A 12-year-old girl who evacuated with her family from Chalmette during
Hurricane Katrina has died after being accidentally shot in the head by a
relative Thursday evening, authorities said.
Alexandra Short was playing on a home computer while her uncle, Michael
Joseph O'Brien, 18, was unloading a .25-caliber pistol nearby.

The gun unintentionally went off while the girl was inside her temporary
home on the 3000 block of Grassy Lake Drive, said Lt. Dale Hodges, a
spokesman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

She later died at a hospital.

O'Brien, 2115 Delille St., Chalmette, was booked into Parish Prison on a
count of negligent homicide.
