Do you honestly think these "modular homes" will stand up to a cat 4 or 5
hurricane next year?

Modular homes that can be delivered in six weeks being shown on
Paris Road

St. Bernard Parish land developer Terry Tedesco is showing modular
homes
that can be delivered within six weeks at a demonstration site in
the 4100
block of Paris Road in Chalmette.

The homes being shown, built by a Texas company, Palm Harbor, are
available
in 1,800 square-foot and 1,500 square-foot models. Two homes were
delivered
to Chalmette on Wednesday and are being placed on foundations by a
crane.

"There's no way you can stick-build a home one at a time,'' said
Tedesco. He
said it is difficult to get the needed materials at a fair price and
trained
labor, including electricians, are also hard to find. "If you could
get
everything it could cost $150 per square foot.''

But modular homes, with a strong exterior, are available for $80 per
foot,
Tedesco said. That includes demolishing a landowner's current home
and
placing the new home on the same foundation, he said. For more
