Parish Announces Proposed Hazard Mitigation Areas

The St. Bernard Parish Council on Thursday announced the First Phase of the
proposed Hazard Mitigation Plan for the parish, but the state prioritizes
local applications and selects projects for funding.

The plan is proposed to include the areas associated with drainage
improvements and improved flood control. But hazard mitigation is a proposed
status and the process involves more public commentary and input before any
package is sent to the state.

The areas include:

-- Homes along the Guerenger Canal on the east bank of the canal from Judge
Perez to the 40 Arpent Canal.

--Homes along the east side of the Chalmette Vista Canal to include
Village Square and the corridor from Judge Perez to the 40 arpent canal
along the canal.

--Homes adjacent to the 40 Arpent Canal in adjacent to the Versailles
Industrial Park to include streets north of E. Liberaux to the Delaronde
Canal.

--Property along the east and west bank of the Delaronde from Judge Perez
Dr.
to the 40 Arpent Canal.

--Homes on the north side of Judge Perez Dr. on Munster Blvd. and Bartolo
Dr.

Florida Avenue corridor is still being looked at as a possible project but
would be done from a different format than mitigation. Property owners along
the 40 Arpent will not be prohibited from rebuilding and if there is a
funding mechanism to design an appropriate east-west traffic corridor then
those properties would be targeted for expropriation.

Simply put, homes along the corridor may be looked at for redevelopment but
it is likely to take a fairly significant amount of time. If you have
property in the area from the 40 Arpent canal to approximately 200 - 300
feet northward call your Council member to discuss it further.
