Civic Center distributing items to public; parish business and tourism
center open and phone numbers listed; brake tag center open; back copies
available of Our Lady of Prompt Succor School yearbooks.


The Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center in Chalmette is open again for St.
Bernard Parish residents to receive numerous free items.

The Civic Center was closed because of damage caused by heavy rains but is
now open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, said Parish Council
member Judy Hoffmeister, who is coordinating the distribution.

"There's lots and lots of clothing and food,'' said Hoffmeister. There's
also free cleaning supplies, infant food, pet food, blankets and winter
coats.

The St. Bernard Business and Tourism Center, set up as a place where
businesses returning to the parish can have access to a computer, fax
machine and phones, has opened in a trailer office across from the old
Council on Aging next to the parish government building.

Temporary phones that have been established there are (504) 208-4026 and
(504) 208-4472.

The office is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to
former Parish President Charles Ponstein, who is heading up business
redevelopment for parish government, but he said plans are to extend those
hours in the future.

He said returning businesses can access and send emails and do other needed
functions. "This can be an office away from their regular office until they
can come back,'' Ponstein said.

Parish Tourism Director Elizabeth "Gidget'' McDougall will operate from the
office as well as the parish's Economic Development Commission.

A vehicle inspection brake tag center has opened in Chalmette at Veronica
Chevron Service Center, 1013 E. St. Bernard Highway.

The business, which also does tire repairs, is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday
through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
