Ward A Justice of Peace Karl Scheurmann of Arabi is retiring; commercial
signs to be removed from parish rights of way

Veteran Ward A Justice of the Peace Karl Scheurmann of Arabi is retiring,
Parish Council members were told this week.

Council member Mark Madary, who represents Arabi, said Scheurmann is
retiring. Scheurmann, who isn't currently living in St. Bernard because of
the hurricane, couldn't be reached for elaboration on his plans.

Madary said a Feb. 8-10 qualifying period will be set to hold a special
election to fill the remaining years on Scheurmann's six-year term. The
justice was re-elected in 2002 and his term runs through 2008.
An April 1 election could be held, Madary said.

Justices of the peace have the power to issue arrest warrants in misdemeanor
cases as well as handle small claims.

Small commercial signs advertising services such as house-gutting, which
cropped up in the weeks after St. Bernard Parish was reopened after
Hurricane Katrina, will be removed by parish government from parish rights
of way and neutral grounds after the New Year.

The Parish Council recently voted to remove the signs but will allow a
centralized location in Chalmette for businesses to advertise their
services. Further details haven't been finalized, such as where the signs
would be allowed, although it will probably be near the disaster relief
center on West Judge Perez Drive, officials have said.

There is also the question of whether the parish or the businesses would put
up the signs at the one location.
