You are right, it's gross if it was actually under the water, and may I add 
raw sewerage, but so many want their memories back. I did salvage some 
clothes and stuffed animals my kids used to play with in their younger days.

It was from the upstairs in my house, no water but the stinky musty moldy 
smell. Washing those things went well and they came out clean and fresh. As 
for stuff that was under the water, yuck, not in a million years.
