I thought I pass this experience along that I had today with Atmos gas.
I called to see if my account was still open since I hope to soon install
a hot water heater as the house is repaired. At that point the Atmos rep
said that my account was deliquent and I would be placed in a collection
agency. I was appalled. I told her that my Sept bill was supposed to be the
automatic bank draft and that it must have been ATMOS, not me, who decided
to stop the automatic bank drafts so they had better not say I was
deliquent. After she did some checking, she said that I first needed to pay
this balance due over the phone which I did. Then she said that to restart
my bank draft for future payments, my gas service had to be restored. She
transferred me over to someone who put in a work request for a gas meter,
since that is the only true way Atmos has of knowing if my house can get gas
service from their lines, i.e. did they repair the lines feeding my street
yet. She said that I would get a phone call from their local repair person
tomorrow as to whether or not gas service is available. If it is, at least
my plumber can do his part now that my account has been settled.

So, bottom line, call Atmos and make sure you aren't in the deliquent
account category just because they stopped your automatic bill pay and fail
to notify you that you have an outstanding bill.
