Jindal came to aid of people of St. Bernard

As sheriff of St. Bernard Parish and a lifelong Democrat, I feel compelled
to respond to a letter to the editor regarding congressman Bobby Jindal.
Of more than 26,000 homes in St. Bernard, very few were spared flooding when
Hurricane Katrina came ashore. More than 100 people lost their lives, and
the toll in human suffering cannot be measured.

The 392 employees of the sheriff's department lost everything they had. The
136 vehicles owned by the department were lost, as well as most tactical
equipment.

In the dark days following the hurricane, we wondered if help would ever
arrive. One of the first officials to come to our aid was Jindal. He and
members of his staff offered help.
It is important to note that St. Bernard is not a part of the congressman's
district; in fact, a majority of the parish voters are Democrats.

As a result of the congressman's efforts, we were successful in securing
FEMA assistance replacing our fleet and equipment necessary to do our job.

On behalf of the people of St. Bernard Parish and my deputies, I would like
to thank Jindal and his staff for their efforts.

Sheriff Jack A. Stephens
