Just some tips for those who are purchasing a new home.

If you have to go to the La. Citizens FAIR Plan for coverage on your new
home and had either the La. Citizens FAIR Plan or the La. Coastal FAIR Plan
on your home in St. Bernard, you will have to cancel the policy on the home
in St. Bernard before they will issue you a policy for the new home.

You can still have coverage on the home in St. Bernard, but it has to be a
different type of policy. I still haven't fully worked through all the
details on it yet, but better to be warned than to have it hit you in the
face.

Regardless of whether or not you previously had any version of the state
insurance, if you are looking to get a state policy there is a 2-3 week
delay in getting coverage. Insurance agents are not allow to write binding
coverage for the state plan, so everything has to go through Baton Rouge.
Keep this in mind when trying to plan your closing dates.

AllState insurance is now writing new home owners policies in southern
Louisiana. However, any new policy has an exclusion for wind storms. This
means you are not covered even for a tornado.
