John,

Not saying he didn't tax, but you didn't mind spending a few pennies
at the pump if you had a job. And remember in many cases those taxes were
needed to bail out the debt the state was in that he inherited. And under
Treen, remember that's when the shipping industry in La. went to crap and
Galveston took over. My dad was working there and lost his job because when
he repealed the gas taxes, he put a flat fee on boats that wanted to dock in
New Orleans. My dad was working for Dixie Machines and Boland and they went
from overtime weekly to unemployment for three years- no ships no work. Why
pay to dock here when places like Florida and Galverston were offering free
docking for the work.

Wendy:

I agree with you on some points, but I must point out that it was Edwards
who slipped in the majority of the gasoline state taxes that we continue to
pay to this day. That is why gasoline in our area is so much higher per
gallon than in the surrounding states.

It was David Treen who introduced a tax cut shortly after being elected to
office, a mistake in my opinion because it was retroactive and when gasoline
prices fell, the budget was impacted for two years in a row. Hindsight is
50/50, but at least he brought honesty and integrity to the office of
governor.
