Powell: Flood level advisories ready for release
Federal advisories on levee protection and the potential for flooding in the
New Orleans' area, information critical for residents deciding whether and
how to rebuild their hurricane-ravaged homes, were released Wednesday, the
federal coordinator for Gulf Coast hurricane recovery said at a news
conference.
"This will enable people to get on with their lives," Donald Powell told
reporters in New Orleans.
David Maurstad, an official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency,
said the news essentially means homes substantially damaged by the storms
likely will have to be raised up to 3 feet before they can be rebuilt and
qualify for flood insurance.
Powell called that good news, saying 3 feet is not that dramatic an
increase.
Those whose homes already exceed current flood elevations will not need to
raise their homes at all -- even if their homes were destroyed last year --
because the new advisory will be based on the assumption that levees now
being repaired and improved will not fail.

So, does anyone know how to navigate that mess at the FEMA website to find
your address?
Thanks!
