The National Guard should have been here for the hurricane but unfortunately
the majority were in Iraq, including my son. When he finally got in touch
with me about a week after the hurricane he was so excited because they were
letting them come home a few weeks sooner than expected because of the
hurricane. I told him I was thrilled he was coming home but he no longer
had a home to stay in and all of his possessions were gone.
When he got back to the states he volunteered to stay active and help with
the hurricane relief effort. He just deactivated last week so that he could
start an internship and try to complete the college courses he was in before
he was called to active duty. He is now living in a garage in back of his
house that is located in Carolyn Park and consists of studs. He doesn't even
know if they will let him rebuild in Carolyn Park. He purchased this home
from his sister after the hurricane and is trying to rebuild. In my
opinion, he did his all for his country & then came back & assisted in
Louisiana's recovery effort for as long as he could. It's time for him to
have some time for himself to complete his education & try to make a new
life like the rest of us. I don't think he should be forced to assist any
longer. Why not have supervised prisoners help out? All they're doing is
sitting in jail while we pay for their upkeep.
