St. Bernard Parish residents can now bring such items as debris from new
construction work, tree-cuttings and trash to a free drop off site on Paris
Road in Chalmette, next to the Unified Recovery Group headquarters, Parish
President Henry "Junior'' Rodriguez announced Thursday.

Rodriguez said this should help residents who are doing their own repairs
because debris from new construction work isn't eligible to be picked at
residences and hauled away by the contracting company removing storm debris
for parish government.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency won't pay for hauling debris left
from new construction such as roofing material, sheetrock or lumber. Private
contractors are expected to haul away their leftover material. Only removal
of storm-damaged debris can be reimbursed by FEMA.

The Paris Road site is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Commercial companies aren't eligible to bring items to the Paris Road site,
only residents.

Also, there are plans to eventually open a second drop-off point at the E.J.
Gore pumping station at Poydras where receptacles will be available for
placing items inside.
