Air-quality monitors operate to settle worries

Advocate staff report
Published: Aug 22, 2006

The state Department of Environmental Quality announced Monday that three
air-quality monitors are operating in Chalmette.

Chalmette Refining LLC purchased the monitors as part of an agreement the
facility made with DEQ in May 2005.

Residents living near the refinery said they were concerned about air
quality and had pushed for legislation requiring air monitoring.

Before that could happen, Chalmette Refining agreed to purchase and install
the air monitors by December 2005.

The monitors will be operated by DEQ, according to a DEQ news release.

Hurricane Katrina delayed that action for several months, but the monitors
are running and the air-quality information should be available on the
Internet, according to a DEQ news release.

Air monitoring results can be viewed online at

The monitors will measure several pollutants, including sulfur dioxide,
ozone and hydrogen sulfide.
