St. Bernard Population Decline

On the other end of the spectrum from Baton Rouge, communities once full of
people are now little better than ghost towns.

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, St. Bernard Parish was home to more than 70,000
people.

To date, less than 12,000 people have returned.

In many areas, basic services like electricity and sewerage are still down.

There are signs of progress, but those who have made the decision to return
have found contractors charging ten times what they were before Katrina.

Officials say more attention from the federal government is needed to aide
in recovery efforts.
