A St. Bernard Parish woman who witnessed an auto accident and ventured into
the street to check for injuries Monday night was struck seconds later by a
truck that crashed into her and one of the vehicles involved in the earlier
wreck, authorities said.

The woman, Angela Mooney, 27, died later at Tulane Medical Center, State
Police said in a news release.

The driver of the truck that hit her was drunk, State Police said.

State Police said Mooney was standing with her children in the parking lot
of an Auto Zone store on Paris Road and Solidelle Road in Chalmette when she
witnessed the accident at 8:34 p.m. She left her children in the parking lot
and went to check for injuries, the news release said.

Just then, a Ford F350 pickup driven by Bobby Smith, 36, of Georgia, slammed
into one of the vehicles involved in the first accident, as well as Mooney.
State Police said Smith was driving north on Paris Road and failed to stop
at the intersection, which did not have operating traffic control signals.

Smith was booked with DWI, vehicular homicide, possession of a schedule IV
controlled dangerous substance and failure to stop at an intersection with
inoperative traffic controls.

Mooney's three children, who witnessed the incident, were taken to a St.
Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office substation and released to their
grandmother, the news release said.
