Battles in St. Bernard

History lives in St. Bernard Parish. At Chalmette Battlefield, for the 192nd
anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, National Park Service rangers and
living history volunteers in period costumes will fire cannons and muskets
and demonstrate crafts and cooking. Visit the kids tent and try on a uniform
or learn a game that soldiers' children would have played. Lantern-lit tours
through British and American camps "the night before the battle" will be
given tonight, starting at 6, with final tours starting at 8:30. On
Saturday, St. Bernard Parish sponsors a re-creation of one of the skirmishes
leading up to the Battle of New Orleans at historic Pakenham Oaks in
Chalmette.

The Battle of New Orleans events will be today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. at 8606 W. St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette. Free. Call (504)
589-2636, ext. 1. The skirmish on Saturday will begin at 4 p.m. at Pakenham
Oaks in Chalmette. Parking and free shuttles available at St. Bernard Parish
Courthouse, 1101 W. St. Bernard Highway. Free.
