there is no move afoot in St. Bernard to approve the travel trailers
as
permanent housing.

That is good to hear.
I too dont like a propect of eternal trailers,
I too know people who have NO obvious way out of a trailer and into a real
home.
There will always be some without a plan and without the necessary
resources, such as those who lived as extended family in houses, and only
one couple or one family got the assistance, which is barely enough for a
home for that couple/family, leaving the remaining extended family members
to fend on their own. Too sad.

Lutheran Social Service Disaster REsponse Service (LSSDR) assist families
and individuals to assess immediate and long term needs and help them access
resources and services via their case management division. Repair and
REbuilding is also done via this service, yet the waiting list is long.
I usually refer only those who have no other means of any help, so let me
know if someone is in dire straits and needs the phone number. Prepare to
wait or be referred to another entity with a shorter waiting list. They do
work with entities such as habitat etc.
SPIRITUAL care is also available, so if you get really down and need a
listening ear, the number is 504-456-1719 (which is also the number for
repair and rebuilding) and in Mississippi 228-282-3753

For those who want to ADD their help and volunteer, the Mississippi number
is the same, in New Orleans call 866-709-0888 if you or maybe a church group
you know wants to send volunteers down to us.

if you want the other number or address or more info email me at
gabyhaze at aol.com. I am only giving the info on where to call or write, I am
not personally doing any of the work.

Gaby
