[StBernard] U.S. Census Bureau releases official post-hurricane population estimates for parishes, July 1, 2006

The Census Bureau has released July 1, 2006 population estimates for U.S.
counties/parishes. These are first official post-hurricane estimates for
Louisiana parishes. The press release and detailed data tables can be found

Over the six-year period from 2000 to 2006 Orleans Parish showed the largest
population loss among all U.S. counties: 261,000 or 53.9 percent. The
Orleans estimate for July 1, 2006 is 223,338 residents down from the
Pre-Katrina July 1, 2005 estimate of 452,170. The population drop from 2005
to 2006 was estimated at 228,782 or 50.6 percent.

Between 2000 and 2006 Ascension Parish was one of the fastest growing
counties in the nation at 27.0 percent (20,708 population) with a 7.6
percent increase from 2005 to 2006. During the 2000 to 2006 period
Livingston Parish grew by an estimated 25 percent or 22,997 people, St.
Tammany Parish grew 20.6 percent with an estimated 39,335 increase,
Tangipahoa grew 12.5 percent, a 12,545 increase, and St. John Parish grew by
12.7 percent. For the 2005 to 2006 period East Baton Rouge showed a 19,264
increase at 4.7 percent, and St. Tammany a 10,971 increase at 4.9 percent.

Almost half of Louisiana Parishes, many in north Louisiana, lost population
from 2000 to 2006. Vernon Parish, home of Ft. Polk, lost 11.0 percent. St.
Bernard Parish estimates show a 76.9 percent decrease from 2000 to 2006 or a
loss of 51,715 people. Cameron Parish had a 22.0 percent decrease from 2000
to 2006, a loss of 2,196. Plaquemines Parish percent loss was 15.9 percent.
