When the Google Maps was first released, Google said they wanted to update
the images every 18 months.  A lot would depend on how often they can get
fresh images for different areas.

Most people only use the free side, they do have a pay side and I'm sure the
more popular areas on the pay side are updated more often than the less
popular on the free side.
