St. Bernard Highway re-opened

A closed stretch of St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette has re-opened after
being closed due to a 3,000 gallon gasoline spill at the Murphy Oil
refinery.

The stretch of St. Bernard Highway from Munster to Jacob streets was shut
down for more than two hours this morning after the gasoline spill,
authorities said.

Col. Richard Baumy, a spokesman for the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office, said
the highway was closed from around 4 a.m. until 6:30 a.m., but has since
re-opened.

Baumy said a gasoline storage tank at the refinery was being filled but
overflowed. He said around 3,000 gallons of gasoline were spilled, but were
contained on the plant site by a levee built around the storage tank.

No gasoline left the plant site, but the road was closed as a precaution,
Baumy said.

No one was hurt, he said.
