St. Bernard sheriff plans news Arabi substation

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office will develop a new substation in
Arabi.

The Sheriff's Office recently spent $35,000 to purchase property and a
building at 1601 Aycock St., at the corner of West Judge Perez Drive, said
Col. Richard Baumy, a Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The St. Bernard Parish Council during its Tuesday meeting gave its blessing
to use the site as a substation.

"We've always had a substation in the front part of the parish,'' said
Councilman Mark Madary, who represents the area.

And Dave Peralta, chief administrative officer for parish government, said
the substation would go a long way in drawing residents back to the
flood-scarred area. "This is a real good plan,'' he said, noting that the
increased police presence will make area residents comfortable.

Baumy said the Sheriff's Office will rennovate the brick building on the
site. He said the old Arabi substation, at Angela and West Judge Perez, was
destroyed in the flooding during Hurricane Katrina.

Baumy said it would be several months before the substation opens, but that
when it is operational some 65 Sheriff's Office personnel will work out of
it.
