Chalmette accident kills two
Motorcycle hit car that entered its path Monday, May 21, 2007By Bob Ussery
A man and woman were killed Sunday in Chalmette when the motorcycle they
were riding struck a car that pulled out in front of them, authorities said.

The motorcycle was on St. Bernard Highway shortly after 5 p.m. when a woman
in a car pulled onto the highway. The motorcycle hit the car, said Maj.
Richard Baumy of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

The motorcycle riders died at the scene at Marietta Drive, several blocks
east of Paris Road. State police are investigating.

Meanwhile, state police were trying to identify a man who was killed early
Sunday in a traffic accident in Metairie. The accident occurred at
Interstate 10 and Causeway Boulevard, Senior Trooper Joseph Piglia said.

The man who was killed was driving a 1988 Chevrolet pickup on the roadway
that carries traffic from westbound I-10 to Causeway, police said. The
pickup was traveling at an extremely slow speed or may have been completely
stopped, police said.

The pickup was struck in the rear by a 2006 Jeep Liberty driven by Nicole
Guagliard, 28, of Metairie, police said. Police said Guagliard attempted to
avoid the pickup, but was unable to. Police said the dead man was not
wearing a seat belt, and was ejected onto the roadway.

He died later Sunday at University Hospital.

Guagliard was not cited, and driver impairment on her part was not
suspected.

It was not known if driver impairment on the part of the dead man was a
factor pending results of a toxicology test.

Trooper Timothy Duncan is investigating.

In another development, state police on Sunday released the identity of a
Harvey man who was killed in a one-vehicle traffic accident early Saturday.

Artis L. Clemons, 59, was driving north on Peters Road on Saturday about 4
a.m. when his 2001 Ford Explorer veered off the right side of the road and
turned over several times in a drainage ditch north of Lapalco Boulevard,
killing him, Piglia said.
