Meetings set to explain new St. Bernard Parish flood elevation standards
Posted by St. Bernard bureau June 12, 2007 10:23AM
FEMA and St. Bernard Parish officials will hold two meetings in Chalmette to
help homebuilders and residents better understand the base flood elevation
requirements that took effect in St. Bernard Parish this month.

Contractors and builders are invited to a meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at
Nunez Community College. A second meeting for the general public will be
Monday at 7 p.m., also at Nunez.

FEMA required the parish to adopt the new flood elevations.

Anyone with substantially damaged property who did not file a permit
application to begin rebuilding before the new elevations went into effect
June 5 will have to adhere to the new guidelines, which generally require
homes to be elevated.

St. Bernard Parish officials said some 10,000 permits were issued prior to
the new flood elevations becoming official, meaning those homes and
businesses were grandfathered and will not have to be elevated to get
insurance.
