SBA reopens loan program for small business owners

The U.S. Small Business Administration is once again accepting applications for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs). Business owners who were adversely affected by the hurricanes of 2005 may qualify for loans up to $1.5 million at a 4 percent interest rate, with up to a 30-year term. Senator Mary Landrieu, a member of the Senate Small Business Committee and the Senate Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the SBA, included $25 million and the authorization to reopen the loans in the 2007 emergency spending bill that passed Congress last month. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School for Science and Technology is set to reopen this coming fall with more than 600 students currently registered. The school is the first to open in its original location within the 9th Ward of New Orleans. The rededication of the school was a day marked with hope and sadness as school officials took a moment to remember the 30 students and their family members who perished during Hurricane Katrina. This opening marks a significant step in New Orleans' recovery.
