Governor Blanco issues statement on WRDA Conference Committee Report

BATON ROUGE - Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco issued the following statement today after members of a conference committee announced an agreement on the Water Resources Development Act, HR 1495. The US House and Senate passed separate versions of the bill earlier this year. The agreement could be considered for final passage as early as next week.

Statement by Governor Blanco:

"Completing the first WRDA bill in seven years is a monumental move in our fight to restore and protect Louisiana's fragile coast. Lead by Congressman Richard Baker and Senator David Vitter, our entire Congressional Delegation did a tremendous job in securing billions of dollars in authorization for critical coastal restoration and hurricane protection projects. These projects will be the cornerstone of Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan, unanimously adopted by the legislature this past session. When I was in Washington in February, I received a commitment from Congress to move the WRDA bill, and I'm glad to see that it has happened. Action on long-awaited projects like Morganza to the Gulf hurricane protection and the Louisiana Coastal Area will move us closer to a safer and more sustainable coastal Louisiana.

"The Congress is expected to pass this Conference Report in overwhelming margins. I urge President Bush to sign it into law immediately. This is a long overdue investment in our nation's critical water resource infrastructure, and a critical part of Louisiana's long term recovery and safety."
