The Council for a Better Louisiana, a nonpartisan governmental watchdog
group, and Louisiana Public Broadcasting will sponsor two gubernatorial
debates this campaign season, one covering general topics and one more
focused on health care issues.
Council President Barry Erwin said the general debate will be September 27th
and the second one will air October 13th.
Candidates invited to participate will have to have at least five percent
support in independent polls or to have raised and spent at least
250-thousand dollars on the campaign.
At this point those guidelines would include U-S Representative Bobby
Jindal, state Senator Walter Boasso, Public Service Commissioner Foster
Campbell and Jefferson Parish businessman John Georges.
Campaign spokesmen for Georges, Campbell and Boasso say their candidates
will participate in both debates, but Jindal campaign manager Timmy Teepell
said his candidate has agreed only to the September 27th debate.
