A 31-year-old Chalmette man was killed Tuesday morning in a single-car
accident on westbound Interstate 10 near Irish Bayou.

Anthony Torres, the son of class action attorney Sidney Torres III, and the
grandson of St. Bernard Clerk of Court Lena Torres, died at the scene
shortly before 9:45 a.m., said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the
Orleans Parish coroner.

Police said Torres was driving a Crown Victoria westbound on Interstate 10
when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the bridge column near the
Irish Bayou exit, according to a New Orleans police news release.

The Crown Victoria was registered to the St. Bernard's Sheriff's Office and
assigned to the clerk of court's office, said sheriff's spokesman Col.
Richard Baumy. Torres held the rank of auxiliary officer.

Torres was part of a trio of investors hoping to revamp the revolving Top of
the Mart lounge when the original owner's lease ended in 2001, but he pulled
out of the deal after the Sept. 11 attacks.

His brother, Sidney Torres IV, is president of SDT Waste and Debris
Services, which provides garbage collection for St. Bernard Parish, the
French Quarter and the Central Business District.
