A local architect has announced his candidacy for the District A seat on the
St. Bernard Parish Council in the Oct. 20 election.

In an e-mail announcing his decision to run, Ray Lauga Jr. said the tragedy
presented by Hurricane Katrina brings opportunities to "make St. Bernard
better than it used to be. We owe it to our ancestors, children and
grandchildren."

If elected, Lauga said he would promote neighborhood covenants to protect
and increase property values, work to restore the coast and close the
Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, push to have FEMA trailers removed, assist
families to complete repairs to their homes and fight to repair the parish's
wastewater system.

Lauga is a graduate of Holy Cross High School and the University of Southern
Mississippi. He is a partner in Hayes & Lauga Architects. He is a member of
the Old Arabi Association and has served as a basketball coach in the St.
Bernard Parish Recreation Department.
