Baker lauds House passage of bill providing technology grants, Southern University to qualify for new program

WASHINGTON – Rep. Richard H. Baker, R-Baton Rouge, today commended the House of Representatives for bi-partisan passage of a bill that authorizes $250 million in fiscal year 2008 to expand Internet and digital access to minority serving institutions. The legislation passed Tuesday evening by a vote of 331-59.

Co-sponsored by Rep. Baker, the bill provides grants for acquiring or augmenting digital and wireless networking technologies and expanding technology education programs.

“Access to technology is a vital component to a quality educational experience,” stated Rep. Baker. “I am excited about the opportunity that this presents for Southern University and for other quality minority serving institutions. These grants will assist our historically black colleges and universities in closing the digital divide and will ensure that all college students have the opportunity to reap the benefits of cutting-edge technology.”

The bill, known as the “Minority Serving Institution Digital and Wireless Technology Opportunity Act,” authorizes grants for purchasing or upgrading equipment, providing training and educational services, and obtaining technical support. It now heads to the Senate for further action.
