With a chance to strengthen the cultural ties between St. Bernard Parish and
the Canary Islands where many parish residents trace their ancestry, world
famous Canarian folk musician and timple player Benito Cabrera will perform
a free concert at Chalmette High at 7 p.m. on Thursday, St. Bernard Parish
government said in a news release.

He will also perform at Tulane University at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"Benito Cabrera is the most important figure in the Canary Islands in
preserving the traditional folk music and his coming to St. Bernard Parish
is an important reaffirmation of the cultural link between St. Bernard and
the Canary Islands,'' said St. Bernard historian William Hyland, who is also
an official of Los Islenos heritage and Cultural society in St. Bernard, one
of the local sponsors of the free show.

Other local sponsors are SDT, Inc., the Consulate General of Spain in New
Orleans, Newcomb School of Music, Tulane University, St. Bernard Parish
government, St. Bernard Parish public school system and Sociedad Espanola.
Cabrera, while in the New Orleans area, will also hold a workshop with
Chalmette High music students at the school Thursday morning and with Tulane
music students on Friday, Hyland said in the news release.
