The first week we light the Prophecy Candle. A glimmer of light,
shining through untold ages, illuminating our path toward Bethlehem -
sparked by the words of the prophet. The people who walked in darkness have
seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness-on them light
has shined. Isaiah 9:2

The second week we light the Bethlehem Candle. The fullness of time
approaches. Caesar's census is proclaimed. A young couple, descendants of
kings, approaches the tiny town. But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathan, from
you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is
from of old, from ancient days. Micah 5:2

The third week we light the Shepherds' Candle. The angel proclaimed
to the shepherds, "All people will share God's great joy for the earth!
Rejoice!" "An angel of the Lord stood before the shepherds, and the glory
of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said
to them, Do not be afraid; for see--I am bringing you good news of great
joy for all the people ! Luke 2:9-10

The fourth candle is the Angels' Candle. What began as one flame,
dim in the darkness, now grows and glows as the angels glowed, charged with
the "glory of the Lord." To you is born this day in the city of David a
Savior, who is Christ the Lord! And this will be a sign for you: you will
find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Luke
2:11-12
