Two men were caught allegedly stealing copper wiring from a Chalmette home
after a neighbor tipped off sheriff's deputies Monday morning, authorities
said.

Jason Joseph Cantrell, 24, and Dwayne Joseph Cangelosi, 25, both of
Chalmette, were booked with burglary after deputies recovered a knapsack
filled with copper wiring in the trunk of their car, said Capt. Mike Sanders
of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

A neighbor called deputies about 9:45 a.m. after seeing two men enter a
partially-gutted house in the 2800 block of Rosetta Drive.

When deputies entered the house, they found Cangelosi hiding behind a wall
and arrested him without incident, Sanders said.

He said Cantrell, who had stepped outside as deputies arrived, bolted when a
deputy approached with handcuffs. The deputy sprained his ankle during a
brief chase, Sanders said.

A short while later, two other deputies found Cantrell hiding in the back
yard of a nearby house and arrested him after a brief scuffle, Sanders said.

Cantrell also was booked with battery of a police officer, resisting arrest
and criminal damage to property.

In addition to the wiring found in the suspect's trunk, several pieces of
cut copper wiring were found inside the home on the floor, Sanders said.
