Well this is old info but it seems FEMA allowed (gave?) some money on the
damaged library. Don't know if it has been used or what for... Isn't there
a library board that would have answers for this? Are they independent of,
or a subset of the local parish government?

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Many residents of St. Bernard Parish lost a valuable
source for research and reading when the St Bernard Public Library was
damaged by Hurricane Katrina. But help is on the way.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that more than $3.6
million in funds have been made available for the library's destroyed and
damaged contents and for building repairs.
Located in the town of Chalmette, at 1125 E. St. Bernard Highway, the
library building was inundated with four feet of standing water from
Katrina. The funds will be used to replace books, multi-media equipment,
computers, and office and library supplies. "The funds will help us replace
what was lost," said St. Bernard Parish Chief of Staff Charlie Reppel. "We
are on our way to returning to normalcy."
A National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claim settlement of more than
$431,000 will provide additional resources for materials and repairs to the
property.

Would someone please respond to a previous question that was asked
last
year:

Why isn't the old library on St. Bernard Hwy being repaired?

The temp trailer provided by the Gates Foundation, "Temp" has
resulted in a
search again for another temp place for the library when the current
use of
it will expire.

If the parish cannot front/acquire the funds required to build the
new
library on the previously acquired land in Meraux at this time, with
a
build schedule years down the road, what's wrong with the old
library
building being repaired and put in service?

Has anyone at the parish level had a professional estimate performed
as to
exactly what must be done including total cost to put this facility
back in
use.

The old library building served the parish prior to Katrina when we
seemed
to be busting at the seams with residents. Seems that it could serve
the
parish well with our reduced residents at this time until the new
library
can be built.
