Hall of Fame to recognize St. Bernardians

The St. Bernard Parish Sports Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony will
be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Nunez Community College Auditorium in
Chalmette.

Three St. Bernard Parish natives will be the inductees. They are former pro
football player and Holy Cross graduate Dalton L. Truax Jr., former pro
basketball player and P.G.T. Beauregard High graduate Yolanda "Loni"
Banks-Thomas, and veteran basketball coach David Neal, a Chalmette High
School graduate.

Stanley "Jay" Sirgo Jr., a former St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department
director, coach and youth activist, will receive the Humanitarian Award for
2007.

Walter Randolph and Danielle Martin, both of whom played sports at Chalmette
High, will be honored as the St. Bernard Parish high school male and female
athletes of the year for 2006-07.

Proceeds from the group's fundraisers benefit St. Bernard schools and the

LENTEN SEAFOOD DINNERS

Lenten seafood dinners will be held today and March 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. in
the Our Lady of Prompt Succor School cafeteria, 2305 Fenelon St., Chalmette.


Sponsored by the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Festival Committee and the
Knights of Columbus Archbishop Francis A. Janssens Council, the events will
include catfish, shrimp or oyster platters for $7, or combo platters for $8
or $9, shrimp fettucine and shrimp and corn bisque for $5 and cheese pizza
for $2. Side items such as French fries, Cajun potatoes, Italian salad, beef
and soft drinks also will be sold. Members of the school's Student Council,
4-H Club, cheerleaders and dance team will sell desserts.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIES

St. Bernard Parish Girl Scout troops will hold cookie sales Saturday and
Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations: Breaux Mart, 315
E. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette; Walgreens, 100 W. Judge Perez Drive,
Chalmette; Winn-Dixie, 3230 Paris Road, Chalmette; and Todd's Technology,
3001 Paris Road, Chalmette.

There are eight varieties. Cookies are $3.50 a box. Booth sales will
continue each weekend through March 9.

TAX ASSISTANCE

Attorneys and law students from Michigan State University's College of Law
will help low-income residents file their federal tax returns Monday through
March 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Center of St. Bernard, 1107
LeBeau St., Arabi.

Tax preparers will assist clients with completing their federal forms and
determining eligibility for the Earned Income Credit. Clients are asked to
bring their 2007 W-2 and 1099 forms along with any other 2007 tax documents,
proof of identification and Social Security cards.

available on a first-come, first-served basis if time allows.

COUNCIL TO MEET

The St. Bernard Parish Council will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the council
trailer near the St. Bernard Parish government complex, 8201 W. Judge Perez
Drive, Chalmette.

FREE IMMUNIZATIONS FOR YOUTHS

The Greater New Orleans Immunization Network will sponsor free childhood
immunizations for children ages 6 weeks to 18 years on Tuesday from 2 to 6
p.m. at Walgreens, 100 W. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette.

Immunization records are required.

The next visit will be April 16.

PEANUT BUTTER DRIVE

The Andrew Jackson Elementary School Junior Beta Club's peanut butter drive
will run through Wednesday.

Small jars of peanut butter are being collected and will be donated to the
St. Joseph Rebuild Center for the homeless. Donations can be given to any
Andrew Jackson student or may be brought to the school office at 201 Eighth
St., Chalmette.

CAROLYN PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION

The Carolyn Park Civic Association will meet Wednesday from 6:50 to 8 p.m.
at Buccaneer Villa Swim Club, 8330 Patricia St., Chalmette.

Items on the agenda include the nomination of officers and Easter
activities.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL SEASON

The St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department is looking for players for the
spring baseball and softball season. All-Star teams will be selected from
these players.

Parents of children ages 7 to 14 can stop by the Recreation Office, located
behind the St. Bernard Parish government complex in trailer K-10, to fill
out a registration form. Parents must bring their child's birth certificate
and proof of residency to registration.

The Recreation Office hours for registration are Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30
a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The annual registration fee per household is $30 per child or $50 for two or
more children. In addition, each child will be charged $25 per season sport
the child wishes to play.

ANIMAL SHELTER

The St. Bernard Animal Shelter, 115 Agriculture Road, Chalmette, has dozens
of dogs and cats available for adoption.

The shelter also needs volunteers to help care for the animals. Donations of
old towels and sheets also are needed.

Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The
shelter is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Please call ahead
before visiting. Because of personnel shortages, the shelter may not be open
