Enviroschool for communities to begin at DEQ

BATON ROUGE – The Department of Environmental Quality is inviting citizens to participate in an
informative “school” to help the public understand the agency and how it operates. An Enviroschool
session, entitled LDEQ 101: Understanding the Agency, will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on May 8 in
the Pensacola Room in the DEQ Conference Center, 602 North 5th Street.

As part of the new “front-loading” concept introduced by DEQ Secretary Harold Leggett, Deputy
Secretary Alex Appeaning has begun the process of educating the public about the agency and its
services using Enviroschool.

“The Enviroschool concept is new to DEQ,” said Appeaning. “Its goal is to help the public understand
the processes so they can work together with the agency and the regulated community. The school will
be managed by Tomeka Prioleau, Community and Industry Relations.”

“Louisiana citizens are interested in the regulatory process and want to contribute to the well being of
our state,” said Prioleau “These open forums, where citizens can ask questions and get answers, will
help DEQ better serve the state in the future.”

Sessions will take place around the state and will focus on a variety of topics. The first, LDEQ 101:
Understanding the Agency will focus on:

* Understanding the vision and mission of the agency
* Challenges and opportunities
* The organization and function of each office and division

DEQ will present this session in Shreveport, New Orleans and Lake Charles soon.
