A burglar has to be either bold or dumb to steal from the law, but that's
what happened sometime over the holiday weekend in Chalmette.

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office discovered Tuesday that one of its
business trailers had been burglarized. The office had been closed for the
weekend and Monday, which was the Memorial Day holiday.

A Sheriff's Office spokesman said the door had been pushed open at the
office, which is part of a compound of several sheriff's buildings along the
roadway to the St. Bernard Parish Port, which is just off West St. Bernard
Highway.

Authorities were compiling an inventory Tuesday of what had been pilfered,
the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The Sheriff's Office and Crimestoppers are offering a $5,000 reward for
information leading to an arrest or indictment. Each agency put up $2,500.

Crimestoppers can be contacted at (504) 822-1111; the Sheriff's Office can
be contacted at (504) 271-2501. Callers don't have to give their name or
testify to receive the reward, the news release said.
