Burglar Steals Sheriff's Assault Rifle

NEW ORLEANS - A burglar made away with nine weapons, including an assault
rifle, and cash from the St. Bernard Sheriff's trailer compound Tuesday. 

Sheriff Jack Stephens confirmed the burglary in a Tuesday statement, and
officials later released more details. Investigators said the burglar likely
had some kind of relationship with the sheriff's office. 

According to the sheriff, the burglary was discovered Tuesday morning at his
main compound in Chalmette. The trailer compound was built to house the
department temporarily in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. 

Officials did not disclose what was stolen. The sheriffÂ’s office and
Crimestoppers are offering $5,000 for information.
