Senate-Passed Budget

Delivers Key Tax Relief Measures for La.
House expected to vote tomorrow on

budget that includes Road Home tax fix.

WASHINGTON - United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today made the
following statement on the Senate's passage by a 48-45 vote of the fiscal
2009 budget resolution conference report. The House is expected to vote on
the budget tomorrow. The nonbinding budget blueprint includes a key
provision to provide tax relief to the recipients of Louisiana Road Home
rebuilding grants.

Sen. Landrieu said:

"This budget is a desperately needed reordering of the nation's priorities,
with a focus on fresh investments in our nation's infrastructure, law
enforcement and education. It marks a realistic approach to the nation's
priorities and begins moving us back toward a balanced budget and even
potential surpluses, as our nation had before President Bush took office.

"This budget also puts Congress clearly on the record in its commitment to
tax relief for Gulf Coast homeowners who are struggling to rebuild. Both the
Senate and House have already taken initial steps toward this goal by
passing my legislation to exempt Road Home grants from taxation.

"It also includes important tax relief for Louisianans, including credits
for families with children, relief from the joint-filing penalty paid by
American married couples and an extension of the adoption tax credit."
