A deal has been struck to build the first hospital in St. Bernard Parish
since Hurricane Katrina.

St. Bernard Parish Hospital Service District has signed a contract with the
Hammes Company, a healthcare facilities developer, to plan, design and build
St. Bernard Parish Hospital.

The hospital, according to officials at Hammes, will be a 40-bed facility
located on a greenfield site in Chalmette to replace the 200-bed Chalmette
Medical Center, which was razed post-Katrina.

For the past two and a half years, the parish residents have had to visit a
temporary clinic in a vacant Wal-Mart parking lot for medical issues.

The completion date for the hospital is 2010, according to Hammes officials.
