The mess on the Mississippi has local water officials asking people to
conserve today.

St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes have shut off their water intakes for
the time being, and the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board said they had
to do the same for their Algiers treatment system.

All three water systems have at least a one-day reserve, which will last
longer the less water people use. So as a precaution, water users are
asked to use a little less until the Coast Guard gives them the all-clear.

Officials hope they will be able to resume treating water before any
service interruptions occur.
