Groundbreaking set for post-Katrina fire station

Associated Press - July 25, 2008 5:14 AM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Hard-hit St. Bernard Parish plans to mark a milestone
Friday: groundbreaking on the first fire station to be built there since
Hurricane Katrina.

Parish President Craig Taffaro's office says the old Fire Station Two has
been demolished and construction is set to begin on the site. His office
says three fire stations are currently being renovated but that this is the
first of 7 slated for rebuild.

St. Bernard, which neighbors New Orleans' hard-hit Lower 9th Ward, was wiped
out by the floodwaters following Katrina. Its recovery has been slow, but
this will be the second milestone marked by the parish in the last two weeks
as it continues to rebuild.

On July 15th, the parish council held its first meeting in its rebuild
chambers since the August 2005 storm.
