St. Bernard Parish officials will break ground this afternoon on the
reconstruction of the parish's Council on Aging building.

The new, 10,000-square-foot building is expected to be finished by
Christmas, the parish said in a news release. The Council on Aging building
is next to the parish government complex on West Judge Perez Drive in
Chalmette.

Like all other parish buildings, the Council on Aging's facility was flooded
during Hurricane Katrina nearly three years ago.

The Council on Aging provides meals and a multitude of services for seniors.
The council currently operates out of a triple-wide trailer in front of the
parish government complex.

The new building will include a cafeteria-style kitchen, large and small
meeting rooms and office space. T-Mac Construction is the contractor.

Ground-breaking is set for 4 p.m.
