State of Louisiana Requests that FEMA Consolidate Gustav, Ike into One Disaster
Also requests additional parishes be eligible for Public Assistance program under Ike
BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Recovery Authority Executive Director Paul Rainwater requested today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) consider hurricanes Gustav and Ike one disaster in Louisiana to cut down on duplicative paperwork and save money.
In a letter to FEMA, Rainwater, who serves as the Governor's Authorized Representative to the agency for Gustav and Ike recovery, requested the consolidation of the two storms because of the effects the 2008 storms had on many parishes that had not yet recovered fully from Katrina and Rita.
"A 'single disaster' approach significantly eliminates duplicated administrative efforts, both on a local and federal level," Rainwater wrote. "This, in turn, is a more efficient approach to recovery, as well as a more cost-effective use of taxpayer dollars."

Created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005, the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA) is the coordinating and planning body leading the most extensive rebuilding effort in American history. The central point for hurricane recovery in Louisiana, the LRA works closely with the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) and partners with state and federal agencies to oversee more than $20 billion worth of programs, speed the pace of rebuilding, remove hurdles and red tape and ensure that Louisiana recovers safer and stronger than before.
