St. Bernard Parish Planning Commission seeks public input Oct. 14

to its proposed revisions to the parish zoning and land use rules

With help of a national planner, parish is trying to modernize its code

The St. Bernard Planning Commission will hold a public hearing during its
regular meeting on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. to get input on sweeping revisions to
modernize the parish's zoning and land use regulations. The meeting will be
in the St. Bernard Parish Council Chambers at 8201 W. Judge Perez Drive in
Chalmette. Public review and input is encouraged.

The proposed revisions are the product of an ongoing $60,000 grant from the
St. Bernard Community Foundation awarded to the government to help with its
recovery. Using the grant, the parish has hired Donald Poland Consulting of
Hartford, Conn.

Poland, a national leader in planning and public policy, the parish
Department of Community Development and the St. Bernard Planning Commission
have worked together to rewrite the parish zoning regulations in an effort
to simplify the rebuilding process for both officials and private
developers.

The Department of Community Development and the Planning Commission have
been reviewing Poland's proposals. After the public hearing where public
comments are solicited, a final draft of the proposal will be written and
submitted to the St. Bernard Parish Council for review, comment, and
approval.

Some specific goals of the zoning and land use regulation modernization
include making the zoning and land use laws more coherent and user-friendly;
establishing a design development district and development review board; and
updating parking, landscaping, and signage requirements.
