The St. Bernard Parish public school districts performance score for 2008
ranked it 31st out of 69 districts in the state, according to statewide
scores released Friday show.

Because school performance scores are calculated using data from the
previous two years, only two schools in St. Bernard Parish received a
ranking: Chalmette High School and Andrew Jackson Elementary.

Chalmette High's score was 81.7, which earned it two stars out of a possible
five. The statewide average for high schools was 75.9.

Andrew Jackson's score was 91.8, which also earned it two stars. The
statewide average for elementary schools was 69.9. Statewide, 40 percent of
the schools received two stars, the largest grouping.

Chalmette and Andrew Jackson were the first schools to reopen in St. Bernard
following the destruction of the public and private school systems by
Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

This year there are 4,500 students in eight schools in the parish.

"I'm really pleased," St. Bernard Parish schools Superintendent Doris
Voitier said. "There's been a lot of turmoil and change the last three
years. I'm very proud of the students and the teachers."

The performance scores are intended to show a school's growth from year to
year. The state Department of Education uses data including standardized
test scores, attendance and dropout rates to help determine the scores.

In addition to determining a performance score, the state also uses the data
to calculate a growth target it expects the school to hit for the next
academic year. Chalmette's growth target is an additional 6.1 points; Andrew
Jacksons is an additional 4.4 points.
