U.S. Census Bureau increases St. Bernard Parish 2007 population estimate

Federal agency puts new 2007 population estimate at 33,439

The U.S. Census Bureau has accepted St. Bernard Parish Government's
challenge of its 2007 population estimate, Parish President Craig P. Taffaro
Jr. said.

"We are pleased with the Census Bureau's recognition of St. Bernard Parish's
growth," Taffaro said Wednesday. "This adjusted population indicates that
St. Bernard is continuing to move out of recovery and into our growth past
Katrina."

The parish officially challenged the Census Bureau population estimates for
2007 that placed St. Bernard's population at 19,826. The new Census Bureau
estimate issued Tuesday for the parish's population for July 2007 is now
33,439, and Taffaro said that validates the parish's current population
estimate of 37,000, nearly 55 percent of its pre-Katrina population.
