Ground Breaking on Florrisant Pump Stations held Friday
St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro Jr. and Parish Council members
held a Ground Breaking to mark the beginning of construction at the two pump
stations at the Florrisant Ring Levee Friday, April 3. These stations are
referred to as the North and the South Florrisant Drainage Pump Stations.
"This is another example of the Recovery and Growth in St. Bernard Parish,"
President Taffaro said at the event celebrating the progress that promises
to offer improved tidal flooding protection when more than $2.9 million in
construction is completed.
Temporary pumps will remain operational until the new stations are
completely rebuilt in about nine months.
The North Florrisant project involves the replacement of two 16-inch
submersible hydraulic driven pumps with each pump capable of pumping 7,700
gallons per minute, diesel engines and related facilities. The South
Florrisant project involves the replacement of two 24-inch submersible
hydraulic driven pumps with each pump capable of pumping 15,800 gallons per
minute, diesel engines and related facilities.
As part of the work at both pump stations, the diesel engines and other
facilities will be raised about 7 feet higher than the facilities damaged by
Hurricane Katrina were originally elevated.
The stations were designed by H. Davis Cole & Associates, LLC, and will be
constructed by Lou-Con, Inc. Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. is the project
manager. The St. Bernard Public Works Department and Water and Sewer
Department under Parish Acting Director of Public Works Logan Martin also
are working on the project.
The North Florrisant Drainage Pump Station and South Florrisant Drainage
Pump Station are generally located in the northeastern end of St. Bernard
Parish near the communities Reggio and Yscloskey, respectively.
