Nearly 600 volunteers helped improve Hannan Youth Recreation Complex

UJC/Jewish Federations of North America brings nearly 600 and more than
$15,000 in donations

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro Jr. said the parish was the
recipient of "one of the largest single day volunteer group visits ever."
UJC/The Jewish Federations of North America came to town with nearly 600
volunteers showing up in the rainy conditions to work on the Hannan Complex.

"In rain and mud, volunteers worked tirelessly with a will to finish and see
the project through," Taffaro said.

In addition to their 2,000 plus manpower hours working on the fields, the
remote control car track, and a mural, the group also donated more than
$15,000 in financial assistance to the Hannan Complex Project.

Volunteers also built benches for team players, picnic tables, garbage can
shelters and returned and painted the some of the interior of the former
Hannan Fine Arts building. The plan calls for transforming the building into
a wonderful youth center and improving the surrounding park and picnic area
in Meraux.

The volunteers, from 60 communities around the country, were in New Orleans
for the United Jewish Communities National Young Leadership Conference. The
conference's theme is service, and the group chose to help St. Bernard
because the members want to be a part of helping rebuild the community.

No FEMA money is available for this facility so the parish is trying to
develop it using donations and volunteer labor. Taffaro offered parish
employees the opportunity to volunteer during their work day as a day of
service as well.

The United Jewish Communities National Young Leadership Conference provided
the lunch and refreshments.

Besides the UJC volunteers, other volunteers included employees of the St.
Bernard Parish Government and Sheriff's Office. In addition to the
volunteers, the St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department and the St. Bernard
Sheriff's Office and Sheriff's Trusties Program also helped with the
project.
